Preserving our Legacy; Securing the Future

The Old Guard is Delta Lambda’s alumni Annual Fund. Your gift goes toward strengthening the Bonds among alumni, enriching both the alumni and undergraduate Delta Lambda experience. Volunteer dues are $100 or more annually. Alumni who give as much as $1,000 are recognized as Sembler Society members. All new contributions are recognized monthly.

Old Guard funds underwrite special projects like the Military Recognition Plaque, the alumni Website, this monthly e-newsletter, alumni reunions, displays of Chapter memorabilia in the Chapter House, and monthly meetings between Alumni Advisors and undergraduate officers.

Contributions to the Old Guard may be made by credit card through this secure link, or, if you prefer to send a check, please make payable to The Old Guard of Delta Lambda and send to Charlie Barnes / 1490 Saint Charles Place / Tallahassee, FL 32308

CHAPTER NEWS

Pi Kappa Alpha remains the top fraternity at Florida State University. As we begin to wind down the 2024-25 school year, chapter membership is comfortably above 200, in line with the other large fraternities at FSU, and the chapter GPA is above a 3.0.

Ryan Paradela ‘24 is the new KD Sorority Dagger Man (4th year in a row for Pike). Also, Christian MacDonald ’23 is a candidate for Tri-Delt Sorority Man of the Year. Christian’s father is Michael MacDonald ’85. Overall, the Chapter raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity this year, especially the Firemen’s Foundation. Lucas Bozeman ’21 was chosen to Host the All-Campus Line Dance. Pike raised more money for Line Dance than any other fraternity.

Pike teams won football and basketball intramurals and are on track to win another Overall IM Championship, their 15th in the last 25 years. Seminole baseball, ranked in the nation’s Top 10, is led by 1st Team All-America, and Team Captain LHP Jamie Arnold ’22. His father Jimmy Arnold ‘92, also a Pike, played football for UCF. According to Wikipedia, “Arnold is considered to be one of, if not the, best prospect going into the 2025 MLB Draft.”

In early April, Brothers and their dates piled into a line of busses and travelled to Nashville for their big annual Weekend. Delta Lambda Pikes were accorded major honors at the annual Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life Recognition banquet in April.

Delta Lambda’s 2025 Executive Officers include (left to right) EVP Jack Lennon ’23, SMC Owen Murtagh ’22, Treasurer Andrew Schatz ’23, IVP Dylan Culmone ’22, Rush Chairman Cannon Diehl ’23, Asst. Pledge Educator Brian Lensengrav ’22, and Sargeant-at-Arms Nick DiLeo ’22.

[Above and left] Delta Lambda Chapter’s officers and campus leaders at the annual FSU Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life Awards Banquet. Delta Lambda received recognition in the form of three prestigious awards. Chapter Advisor Steve Walker ’81 was named FSU Fraternity Advisor of the Year. Past SMC Lucas Bozeman ’21 was named FSU Fraternity Member of the Year, and Delta Lambda Chapter was awarded the Certificate of Excellence for “Culture of Care; The Wellbeing Vanguard”.

Special Thanks

We are deeply grateful for your most recent, generous responses to support the Old Guard.

Several ‘Pikes of the 60’ have sent generous annual contributions of $100, including David Giordano ’65 [email protected] and Harry Kapple ’69 [email protected]. Bill Knight ’69 was kind enough to send $200. Family business kept Bill from coming to the Reunion.

Thank you to two of our most involved Tampa Bay Pike stalwarts: David Kresge ’73 [email protected] for his $100 annual gift, and to Gary Prescott ’72 [email protected] for his $200 gift. Gary said, “I wanted to bring my contributions up to date or 2024 and 2025.”

Thank you to Legacy Dad Wayne Johnson ’72 [email protected] (son is Matt Johnson ’03) for his $100 annual gift.

Special thank you to Howard Hunter ’73 [email protected] for his post Reunion gift of $400 to The Old Guard.

Another special thank you to Jay Campbell ’87 [email protected] for his extra gift of $250 in addition to the $100 annual gift he already made in January.

And we are especially grateful to Sean Carbonell ‘86 [email protected] for his most generous $2,000 gift to The Old Guard. Sean was able to join us in early March for the Ritual Initiation of John Lowsky ’25, son of Sean’s pal Steve Lowsky ’84.

Cole Lindquist ’13,I went out to Houston last weekend for the Spartan Sprint (5k) & Super (10k). Amazing experience with some amazing people. There’s no better feeling than crossing that finish line. Next up: The Spartan Beast (21k) & Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga.” Cole’s father is Legacy Dad and former varsity swimmer Brett Lindquist ’82.

Deep within the FSU Archives is a posed photo of Larry Steyerman ’58 taken to promote the FSU Health Services. Larry’s varied career included owning The Talem (a popular club near the Pike house back in the day), and a full-time boat captain and professional poker player. The picture was made when Larry was the photographer for the Florida Flambeau. This winter Larry sent his 1950s Pike athletic jersey and his fraternity pin to be preserved and displayed in the Delta Lambda Archives.

Barry Smith ’71: “Gotta love doing business with a fellow PiKA Brother, especially when it’s Ken Marks ‘80. I’m definitely enjoying my new GMC Sierra truck, so if you need a new ride, don’t forget Ken at Coast Buick GMC in Port Richey.”
The foyer in Sembler House is named for Ken, recognizing his generous contribution in the 2001 Capital Campaign.
Barry is a Legacy Dad (Andrew Smith ’10), and former receiver for the Bucs and the Packers. He still ranks among the Top 10 all-time Seminole receivers in yards after catch.

Rich Wall ’66 wrote, “I played golf yesterday at Harbour Town Golf Course at Hilton Head. Saw this big portrait of Hubert Green ’65 on the first floor. He won the Heritage Tournament there in 1978. Very cool.”

These starters from the 1976 IFC Basketball Champions celebrated at the 2025 Grand Reunion in March, on the 50-year anniversary of their winning achievement. Left to right: Scott Griffith ‘76, Denny Hepler ‘76, Steve Laird ‘73, Rodney Alsop ’76 and Danny Hendrix ’75. Thanks to Mike Markowski ’75 for the photo.

Pike News: Dr Jim Pitts ’62 (Kentucky) Legacy Dad of John Pitts ’06 was inducted into the FSU College of Business Hall of Fame….Stan Sheppard ’58 (Auburn) is a Trustee of the Biletnikoff Award, and he was able to have a private chat with guest speaker Gino Toretta ‘91 (Miami) at the annual banquet. Gino told him, “I wasn’t really thinking about fraternities, but a couple of my offensive linemen were Pikes and when they asked me to pledge, I realized it was in my best interests as the quarterback…I really enjoyed it, plus the house was next to our practice facility, and the Pike house has a swimming pool…Right after I won the Heisman Trophy the Brothers had shirts made with the Pike crest and my face and the trophy. I imagine it was illegal as hell but they made a lot of money.”…Richard Finlaw ‘61 responded to the photo of the ‘Pike house in the snow’,  “Whoever said, "Time waits for no man" was right on the mark.  I look back now with many found memories of high school, university and PKA at FSU, the Navy, marriage, 3 wonderful kids and 5 grand kids growing up, 35 years in the education profession and marvel at the speed with which it all passed”….Better Late than Never: Congratulations to FSU Law alum Howard Hunter ‘73, of Hill Ward Henderson in Tampa, who was named the 2018 Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Florida Chapters American Board of Trial Advocates.

Dick Klunk ’67 asked Aaron Beam ’68 what year he was initiated. Aaron responded, “My initiation in 1968 changed my life forever. Because of PiKA, I got my first job when I got out of the Army thanks to Randy Jones ’71. Andy Miler ’70 introduced me to Frank Warren (son is Scott Warren ’77) and that launched a 31-year career with State Farm. I learned the fine points of recruiting from Charlie Barnes ’65, which I used as a manager hiring new agents. I was one lucky guy. What a life!”

LTC Patrick Sullivan ’01 (USMC) was a member of the Colony in 2000 when Ryan L’Homme suddenly entered Chapter Eternal through a tragic accident. Ryan was a popular member and leader and great things were expected of him as the Colony moved toward Installation and the Re-Chartering of Delta Lambda.

In 2001, Delta Lambda undergraduates and alumni raised $10,000 to establish a Scholarship Fund in Ryan’s name. Every year, a deserving Delta Lambda undergraduate who meets the required criteria, received a $500 scholarship award.

LTC Sullivan writes, “On this 25th anniversary year of Ryan’s passing, a group of Ryan’s friends and others who honor his memory and achievements, want to double the Scholarship to $20,000 so that each year the selected young Brother of Delta Lambda can receive a Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.”
The efforts to meet this goal have already surpassed $6,000 and another $4,000 will bring the total scholarship up to $20,000.
The fund is housed in the Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation in Memphis, and contributions to the L’Homme Scholarship are may be tax deductible.

Since May of 2024, these contributions have been recorded to date:
Ed Barnes ’71 $1,000
Stephen Briggs ’01 $1,000
Brian Lorch ’01 $1,000
Patrick Sullivan ’01 $1,000

Gary Prescott ’72 $105
Clint Wallace ’01 $105
Anthony Arzola $100

In addition, a total of $740 has been received from seven individuals who are not members of the Fraternity.
