CHAPTER NEWS

After The Tragic April 17th Shootings at Florida State

In cooperation with St Thomas Moore Co-Cathedral, a Devine Mercy Mass was performed Sunday, April 27th at the Pike house. “In the wake of recent tragedy on our campus, Pi Kappa Alpha invites the FSU community to come together in prayer and healing. Please join our Brotherhood this Sunday for a special Catholic Mass at the Pike House. As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, may this be a moment of light, unity, and hope for our campus. All are welcome and we especially invite all members of the FSL community.”

Pikes Are Overall IM Champions for the 15th Time in 25 Years

For the record, this means that Pike has won the overall IM title more times than all the other IFC fraternities combined in this first quarter of the 21st Century.
From the Chapter: “Congrats to our brothers for bringing home the 2024–25 All Campus IM Championship by a landslide. Shoutout to all of our athletes for bringing it home. Champions in Basketball, Football, Softball, and Frisbee.”

Editor’s note: Now, for some of our alumni who will be shocked to see the word ‘Frisbee’ it should be acknowledged that Frisbee is now a big deal, and our guys love it. For those who remember Frisbee as the sport of choice for the ragged unwashed on Landis Green, competitive Frisbee today has become an acclaimed and honored pursuit.
Nostalgia will recall when fraternities at FSU competed in IM sports like Track & Field, Wrestling, Superstars, Soccer, etc. Time and tastes change, but Champions are always Champions. Congratulations to Florida State’s Premier Fraternity.

Chapter Advisor John Peacock ’01 writes, “IM Champions, football (7x7 and 4v4 both) won to end the year. The Catholic Mass initiative was a great success. All National surveys and standards applications have been completed for the Smythe Award. All awards will be handed out at the beginning of August. We had an absolutely fantastic semester all around.”

Alumni News

Former Pike Little Sister Ginger Bowden Madden and son Michael Madden ’14. Ginger is the State Attorney for the First Judicial Circuit of Florida.

Ginger writes, “My sweet son, Mike, and me, in Atlanta. We split the tomahawk ribeye and an old fashioned (or two). Till next time baby boy.” Ginger was an active Pike Little Sister, and a member of Tri-Delta Sorority. Her father is Coach Bobby Bowden ’49 (Chapter Eternal), her brother is Jeff Bowden ’80. And Michael’s father was John Madden ’78 (Chapter Eternal). Coach Bowden participated in his grandson Michael’s initiation Ritual in 2014.

Better Days, Long Ago

Rich Wall ‘66 writes, “Oh my!  I did some digging yesterday and figured this photo was taken in 1994.  Beginning in 1991, one of us had a kid attending FSU.  My son, Chris (lost colony/Fireman member), was the first.  Jimmie later had a daughter attending and Reever a son (now a country rock star and big supporter of The Battle’s End).  We used their attendance to schedule annual reunions in the Fall.  Hump, being a Silver Chief, could get tickets.  We’d stay at the same hotel.  Come in Thursday, play golf on Friday, go to Hooters for lunch, attend game on Saturday, and leave Sunday.  Noles were usually victorious no matter who they played.  Of course, there were the usual nostalgic visits in Tally.  Our reunions ended when Hump was diagnosed with ALS.  Still treasure the memories.  I mentioned the last reunion in Hump’s eulogy.”

Ad Astra

Bob Reeve ’66 was co-Founder of the Pike Little Sisters Organization. He was proud that the Chapter voted him winner of the prestigious Ed Cubbon Award signifying the best and most loyal Brother.  Bob passed into Chapter Eternal on March 21st.

The ‘Pikes of the 60s’ were hit especially hard by the deaths of Bob Reeve ’66 and Don Mulligan ’68. Each Brother entered Chapter Eternal this March.

Don and Bob were popular Brothers, loyal to the Fraternity and valued friends. Along with Dave Giordano ’65, Bob Reeve was a co-Founder of the Pike Little Sisters organization (of which he served as Coordinator), and helped draft the original Little Sister Initiation ceremony; a copy is in the Chapter Archives. Don’s son Kyle Mulligan played basketball for the Seminoles in the mid-1990s and would have been a Legacy Pike if we had been on campus in those years.

Soon after the sad news was received, one Brother sent a gift of $1,000 to The Old Guard to be designated as a Memorial to Bob Reeve.

Here are some edited biographical remarks that Bob shared with the Pikes of the 60s in 2021:

“Departing FSU after my senior year was not my idea, but my draft board changed my classification from student to 1A. Exploring my options, I decided to take the best offer: The United States Marine Corps…After my separation, I returned to Mobile and fully intended to get back to Tallahassee, get my degree and enroll in graduate school. But it was then that “life happened”: I met a girl, got married and started a family. I discovered I enjoyed outside sales: advertising, pharmaceuticals, decorative products. These pursuits took me to Birmingham, Atlanta, Washington, Chicago and other major cities. Back in Mobile in the early 1990s, I re-married, and spent 20 years in industrial safety and health as an instructor, trainer, site-inspector and Director. I still do consulting and inspection work.

The idea for a Pike Little Sisters organization came from David Giordano ’65 who approached me in the spring of 1966. We began interviewing girls and the process took on a life of its own. It was always intended that the organization be semi-independent, with their own officers and rules of governance. That meant there needed to be a liaison to coordinate the activities of the organization with those of the Chapter. I didn’t want the job of babysitting 30 sharp, hot women every two weeks, but somebody had to do it”

Don Mulligan ’68  Chapter Eternal, March 5, 2025

Jim Riscigno ’65 wrote, “It is sad to see our numbers dwindle but such is the course of our lives with most of us in our 80’s.  My involvement thanks to Ray Hayes ’63 (Chapter Eternal) in 65 and 66 was not one that enabled me to be involved like you and the others due to my jobs and other responsibilities, but I feel a strong bond and agree with you that we should strive to spend any time we can together.  I would hope we could plan another event and gathering for the group from the 60’s.  I will be happy to help if I can as I live parttime in Tallahassee now.  Ginger and I purchased a place at Westminster Oaks a great CCRC here in Tallahassee. Phi Phi !! Jim Riscigno [email protected] 850-322-8822

David Orr ’62 writes, “Well, I hope that everyone is thinking/considering another Pike '60's gathering before we lose to many more of this ancient crowd.  Always a sad note to receive this info but thank you for letting us know. I remember Bob Reeve quite well during my last couple of years in Tallahassee and enjoyed catching up with him during our reunion several years back. We are all aging, hopefully gracefully and pleasant memories, good times and friends help to ease our transition. Phi Phi!!! I know that I will miss Buddy Inman ’60 and now Bob Reeve!!! Make sure that Silly Frew ’67 is available for entertainment.”

Jim Poe ‘66 wrote: “No one had a better roomie than me.  We set the standard in the "New House" decor and hospitality.”  [email protected]

Tom Wurzbach ’64 wrote, “Delta Lambda is well represented in Chapter Eternal”. [email protected]

Dick Klunk ’67 wrote, “It was sad to hear of the passing of our two Brothers.  I wish I had got to know them better.  I’m sure, as for all of us, that being a Pike was a cherished memory for them. Prayers and condolences go out to their families. [email protected]

Bob Ward ’67 wrote, “I do remember as I was Bob’s Little Brother….  We shared a number of memories during our reunion couple years back.” [email protected] (321) 287-4608

Bob White ’63 wrote, “Always Sad to hear such news but at our point in life it’s far too often!! May they now reunite with our brothers who have gone before!! Rest in peace. Phi Phi K A.” [email protected]

Rich Wall ’66, “[Bob] was a heartbreaking loss for me.  The 2021 reunion was the last time I saw him.  We sat together during the game and the thrilling ending.  I talked to him a number of times since then.  Always fun.  His health was failing him which is why he was in a hospice in Nashville at the end near his son, Tyler.  He was the very best kind of friend.” [email protected]

Bob Tunkel ’66 wrote, “As you probably remember, Bob had the tough assignment as Little Sisters coordinator!” [email protected]

Fred Buhl ‘69 wrote, “It is always sad to lose a friend. Adding to the burden is the realization that we are at the age where our friends and relatives are passing regularly. Each day is a gift - try to do something special each day. And 'special' does not have to be a big event. - just a kind word or phone call is special to someone.” All the best, Fred Buhl [email protected]

John Stoner ’64 wrote, “Attended a Celebration of Life this afternoon. Way too many of those lately!”
[email protected]

Don Altemus ’66 wrote, So sorry to read of their passing. Just a few years ago I sat with Bob Reeve at the reunion football game with Noles taking down the Canes. Getting a lot of practice with end of life reality these days. Only can fight on every day!” [email protected]

Bill Knight ’69 wrote, “Gentlemen, please join me as I take a reflective moment…With the passing of each of our Brothers, I am called back to those memorable times spent together…Bob Reeve and I were good friends at FSU…nicknaming me “Digger” in keeping with my college years in my ‘Funeral Director/Coroner’ roles to support my “college expenses”.

We went our separate ways during those troubling months that followed graduation ‘69. But as fortune would follow, we were reconnected, incredibly, through Bob’s son Tyler, meeting by sheer luck in 2010 on a group ski trip to Vail, CO with young Delta Lambda Pikes, FSU Cheerleaders, Adam Corey and my great friend and host, Dan Gilbertson, Tallahassee business owner and entrepreneur.

One question led to another and we ended up calling Bob at midnight…figured I would be given Grace on that!  We reconnected at that point and greatly enjoyed our get togethers that followed in the years to come as well as the zoom calls shared with many of you.

Rev. Billy Graham once said, ”When we are confronted with the death of someone we love, we all pause for a moment in time, to consider Eternity”.

As Pikes, our brotherly love is exemplified by the acceptance, kindness and dignity we show one another and those around us and by the respect we show to ourselves and others.

Across the past 58 years for me…longer for some of you…the endearing memories of Pi Kappa Alpha continue to live on, shared by us all and have been a foundational cornerstone of maturity and growth.

Let not your Hearts be troubled, Gentlemen…🙏

Pi Kappa Alpha’s “Chapter Eternal” holds reservations for each of us…and because I have yet to locate my expiration date anywhere, (other than on my Pacemaker Battery 🤣), I choose to live each day to its fullest…as if it were my last!

Dave Mathews got it right, when he sang…”Celebrate we will, for life is short, but sweet, for certain!

In the Bonds of Pi Kappa Alpha. Bill Knight ’69 [email protected]
