Join the Old Guard of Delta Lambda!

Preserving our Legacy; Securing the Future

The Old Guard is Delta Lambda’s alumni Annual Fund. Your gift goes toward strengthening the Bonds among alumni, enriching both the alumni and undergraduate Delta Lambda experience. Volunteer dues are $100 or more annually. Alumni who give as much as $1,000 are recognized as Sembler Society members. All new contributions are recognized monthly.

Old Guard funds underwrite special projects like the Military Recognition Plaque, the alumni Website, this monthly e-newsletter, alumni reunions, displays of Chapter memorabilia in the Chapter House, and monthly meetings between Alumni Advisors and undergraduate officers.

Contributions to the Old Guard may be made by credit card through this secure link, or, if you prefer to send a check, please make payable to The Old Guard of Delta Lambda and send to Charlie Barnes / 1490 Saint Charles Place / Tallahassee, FL 32308

We are astonished, and humbled, by the cascade of generous end-of-year contributions this month supporting the work of The Old Guard.

John Stoner ’64, Founder and President of The Stoner Organization sent this message, “Enclosed in my $900 check to cover The Old Guard donations for Bob Stoner ’64 (Chapter Eternal), Rob Stoner ’88 and myself for the years 2024, 2025 as well as 2026. Life is good!” [email protected]

Jack McMullen ’64, member of the Old Guard Board, wrote, “I made a donation via the Delta Lambda link....$300 for 2026, 2027 & 2028. IF I have not entered chapter eternal as of 2029....I will be able to continue....Life is good.” [email protected]

We are especially grateful to Mike Lait ’78 for his continuing support. Mike pledged $1,000 in 2025 and delivered a check for $500 at the November Luncheon. Mike routinely drives down from Alabama to share Pike fellowship at the Monthly Leadership Luncheons. [email protected]

During the November ‘Pikes of the ‘60s Reunion’ both organizer Bob Tunkel ’66, and past SMC J.L. Milton ’62, delivered their annual contributions in person, Bob for $200, and J.L. for $100. J.L. is a Legacy Dad. His grandson Parker Milton ’22 is currently SMC of the Pike Chapter at the University of Delaware. Bob Tunkel was original driver of the ‘Pikes of the 60s’ Reunion in 2022. He and Jim Riscigno ’65 successfully collaborated on this most recent Reunion in November.

We are grateful for the loyalty and generosity of all alumni who support Delta Lambda. Each contribution will be acknowledged in the monthly newsletter when it is received. The cumulative giving record will now appear as an annual report. The record has become too large to fit into available newsletter space. However, that list is always available immediately to donors.

CHAPTER NEWS

Delta Lambda ‘Sires and Sons’ Initiation, Fall, 2025

Delta Lambda’s largest fall pledge class in history included five new Brothers who are the sons or grandsons of Pikes. Four of the five (above) from left are: Pledge Class President Hudson Khan ’25 and his grandfather, past SMC Andy Miller ’70; Dylan Lees ’25 and his father Rob Lees ’89 (Alpha Eta, UF); Caleb McDonald ’25 and his grandfather Murray Hill ’66 (Delta Zeta, Memphis State); Ben MacKinnon ’25 and his father, former Rush Chairman Alex MacKinnon ’83.  Not pictured are Ben Larguier ’25 and his grandfather Ernest Jabour ’62 (Upsilon, Auburn).

In addition to these “True Blood” Pikes, five more new Brothers are siblings of Delta Lambda Pikes. They include Pledge Zach Porter ’25 (brother Ben Porter ’21); Teagan McNealy ’25 ( brother Nolan McNealy ’20); Owen Shannon ’25 (brother Connor Shannon ’24); Easton Scott ’25 (brother Jaxon Bradford Scott ’24); Brant Summers ’25 (brother Cole Summers ’23).

SMC Owen Murtagh ’22 singled out Pledge Educator Riley Scofield ‘23 for his exceptional leadership, and that of his Pledge Ed Team, in guiding 81 out of 85 pledges to a successful and meaningful Initiation.

UNDERGRADUATE NEWS

SMC Owen Murtagh ’22 and his officers offered updates at the Monthly Leadership Luncheon, November 5th. “The Chapter is absolutely in the best position since I’ve been here.”
“For our Fall Formal, 72 Pike couples flew to Puerto Rico and enjoyed a weekend at a beautiful beach resort. Our Halloween Party was massive. Even though we have great risk management procedures in place, last weekend was very stressful on the officers because the crowd was too big to handle. We had a huge line outside waiting to get in and we were at full capacity. We asked the cops for their assistance in managing the crowd, which they did.”

“We initiated 81 fall pledges (started with 85), which is the largest on campus and also largest in the National Pike Fraternity. Pledge Educator Riley Scofield ’23 and his team did a fantastic job organizing and motivating the pledges. This fall class includes a number of FSU Baseball players including Brody DeLamielleure ‘25, Cal Fisher ‘25, Gabe Fraser ‘25, Brayden Dowd ’25 and Presley Woodson ’25. All the varsity baseball pledges are already super involved in the Chapter.”

“Elections will be held December 3rd. Three Brothers are running for SMC. Relations with the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs has never been better. And the same is true of IFC. We have placed a younger Brothers on the IFC Executive Committee.

“Brother Lucas Varnedore ’23 was named DG Sorority Anchor Man. We are honored to announce that Lucas has raised over $13,000 in his campaign to support Delta Gamma’s philanthropy, Service for Sight. Thank you to everyone who supported our Brother. We are excited to be representing Delta Gamma Sorority. Another Pike Brother is running for Chi Omega Man.”

“In Intramural Sports, we won the 3x3 Basketball Championship, as well as the Tennis Singles and Tennis Doubles titles. The undefeated Pike flag football team won the overall IM Championship”

From left: Title IX Officer Ryan Paradela ’24; External Vice President Jack Lennon ’23; President Owen Murtagh ’22;

Pledge Educator Riley Scofield ’23; Sergeant-at-Arms Nick DiLeo ’22; Internal Vice President Dylan Culmone ’22; Rush Chairman Trevor Vogel ’22.

Our executive board represented Pike at the renowned Clock and Seal dinner hosted by the Burning Spear Society.  The annual banquet takes place during Homecoming Week.

Pi Kappa Alpha officers were guests of the event along with other top organizations throughout campus.

Alumni News

Joe Feheley ’81 reported on behalf of the alumni at the November 5th Luncheon.
“We’re planning a big Founders’ Weekend, February 27-March 1, 2026. We’ve already set aside rooms at The Indigo in College Town.
There will be a social at Bowden’s restaurant in College Town on Thursday night, golf and FSU baseball on Friday, and a big bonfire and pig roast hosted by at Rudy Rowe ’87 at his ranch on Saturday.”

John Stoner ’64 enjoys the monthly newsletter. He was able to correct a caption in the October issue. “Well done, as usual, except the 1960s photo misidentifies John Walsh ‘63 and John Walker ‘63.  Bob White ’63 is not in the picture”…. From Joe Keyser ‘20, “Great newsletter that just got posted, always appreciate the effort that goes into these. Could you please mail a copy of the latest Pikes Illustrated to me? Joe Keyser 302 Harbour Place Dr Apt. 3306 Tampa, FL 33602 [email protected] 813-526-1551....Doug Russell ’79 saluted Delta Lambda’s NFL kicker Ryan Fitzgerald ’19 for his walk-off game winner as the Carolina Panthers beat the Green Bay Packers on November 2….Bill Parker *49 was honored in November as oldest living Seminole Letterman. Bill will be 100 next April. Parker pledged Pi Kappa Alpha in 1948 but was not initiated for financial reasons. This unfortunate shortcoming was corrected in 1982 when Bill was finally officially welcomed into Delta Lambda Brotherhood by Andy Miller ’70 and other Pike alumni. Bill lettered in three sports, starting with the earliest Basketball team in 1946. He played halfback for the Football team in 1947 and played Baseball in 1949. Bill later was a Founding member of the Golden Chiefs, and served as National Chairman of Seminole Boosters, Inc in 1986….

Charlie Barnes ’65 and his wife Connie were honored to perform the ceremonial lighting of the Unconquered Statue spear the night before the Wake Forest game, November 1st.

Legacy Dad Mark Gambill ’81 joined Seminole Boosters President Stephen Ponder on the Seminole Boosters podcast “In the Box”. Mark is a former Fortune 500 CMO and company co-founder. He is a retired Marketing Professional for Dell, and for Home Depot. In considering ‘practical leadership’, Mark advised “Keep it simple, listen louder, set reasonable, time-boxed goals, and get comfortable with data, and failure.”….The most recent “Pikes of the 60s Reunion” took place November 14th and 15th. Much credit is due to the organizational skills and leadership Bob Tunkel ’66 and Jim Riscigno ’65 for making the weekend a success. Look for pictures and a review in the December Newsletter.

From Zach Schindler ’21, “The photo is of Gerardo “Jerry” Perera ’20, and Hunter Pollack ‘19. Jerry and I are now 3Ls at St. Thomas University College of Law. We were selected as top students to attend oral arguments at the US Supreme Court and take a tour of the Department of Justice. We met Hunter, who gave us the tour and introduced us to his colleagues. He currently serves as counsel to the Associate Attorney General, Stanley Woodward.”

Pikes Charlie Bradley ’81 and Gene Deckerhoff ’14 ran into each other in the Atlanta airport in November.  Most likely a fraternal beverage was shared between flights.

Only 50 Years Ago

(From the June 1976 Shield & Diamond magazine)
“Delta Lambda (Florida State – 218 South Wildwood, Tallahassee, Fla 32304) gained the largest pledge class on campus again for the fifth consecutive year. The 36-man group is one of the most impressive in recent years.

“Brothers Bob Anderson ’72, Ricky Blythe ’72 and Chris Griffin ’73, were named to “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” this fall. Bob Coury ’72 is President of Gold Key, Cliff Davenport ’73 was Chairman of FSU’s Homecoming Parade, and Mike Sweeney ’74 is a candidate for President of the Student Body. In athletics, the Pikes are represented on the Varsity Football team by nine Brothers and pledges, including Chapter SMC and starting fullback Fred Miller ‘73.

“More than 30 Pikes are on Florida State intercollegiate varsity or club athletic teams. The Chapter’s IM basketball team is currently undefeated, and the Pikes are defending Champions in softball, volleyball and golf. The Chapter currently numbers 115 Brothers and pledges plus 55 Little Sisters of the Shield & Diamond.”
